A veteran treated at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston has become the first patient in the entire VA healthcare system to receive a minimally invasive laser treatment for epilepsy. Robert Lindemann, who served nearly 33 years in the Army National Guard before retiring as a commissioned officer, underwent the groundbreaking procedure using technology called Visualase V2, marking a significant expansion in neurosurgical capabilities available to veterans across the country.
Lindemann's journey to this historic procedure began after he was diagnosed with focal epilepsy following years of unexplained episodes where he would lose time and feel disconnected from his surroundings. After trying numerous medications without success, he was referred to the epilepsy center of excellence at the Houston facility, where testing revealed his seizures originated deep in his right temporal lobe. The traditional treatment would have required a craniotomy, an invasive open brain surgery to remove a large portion of his temporal lobe, a prospect Lindemann understandably found frightening.
The Visualase V2 system represents a dramatic departure from conventional brain surgery for focal epilepsy. Dr. Garrett Banks, the neurosurgeon who performed the procedure, explained that the technology delivers extremely precise laser ablation through a slender fiber optic catheter inserted through a hole in the skull just 3.2 millimeters wide, smaller than a pencil eraser. Real-time MRI guidance allows surgeons to monitor tissue temperatures moment by moment, making immediate adjustments to protect surrounding brain structures while precisely targeting the problem tissue. Lindemann was discharged just two days after the procedure and reported feeling great within four days.
This advancement matters particularly for veterans with focal epilepsy, deep brain tumors, or radiation necrosis who previously faced only the option of invasive open surgery with its associated risks, lengthy recovery periods, and potential cognitive impacts. While the Visualase technology has been used at a limited number of leading academic epilepsy centers, it had never been available at any VA facility until now. The successful implementation at the Houston medical center opens the door for this treatment to become available to veterans at other VA facilities nationwide.
