VA research advances suicide prevention and brain-computer interface

The study, published in the European Heart Journal, tracked veterans who were not frail and did not take statins at the study's beginning. Frailty is a known risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and this research suggests the relationship may work in both directions, with cardiovascular interventions potentially preventing frailty in older veterans.
The third breakthrough involves a brain-computer interface study conducted with the VA Center for Neurorestoration and Neurotechnology. A man paralyzed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis used implanted electrodes to translate his brain activity into speech and computer actions over nearly two years. The participant used the device for more than 3,800 hours at home without researchers present, maintaining full-time employment and communicating with family and friends at an average rate of 56 words per minute with 92 percent sentence accuracy. Published in Nature Medicine, this research demonstrates that brain-computer interfaces can function independently in home settings, marking a critical step toward restoring function to paralyzed veterans.
