VA research findings on prostate cancer, aging, and TBI
The Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Research and Development has released three significant research findings that could directly impact how veterans receive care for prostate cancer, maintain independence at home, and manage traumatic brain injury symptoms. The first breakthrough involves a new DNA-based classification system designed to predict the risk of death from prostate cancer. Among participating veterans, 85 percent felt they were doing better at home, 90 percent felt more able to manage their VA care, and 89 percent were satisfied with the program overall. The research revealed that Choose Home promotes aging in place by fostering autonomy and dignity, provides holistic care during health crises through coordinated support, and empowers caregivers through education, relief, and practical assistance.
The third finding addresses traumatic brain injury, a signature wound affecting many veterans from recent conflicts. While physical activity is already known to improve mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, and PTSD symptoms, VA researchers in San Diego and Greater Los Angeles demonstrated that exercise can also improve health outcomes specifically for veterans with TBI. The VA Million Veteran Program survey included more than 7,000 veterans who had been screened for TBI and found that the connection between physical activity and health outcomes was even more pronounced in those with brain injuries. Higher levels of physical activity showed greater effects, but even small amounts of exercise resulted in meaningful improvements in chronic TBI symptoms.
