VA research reveals findings on drug safety and chronic pain

The third finding reveals a previously underappreciated connection between metabolic syndrome and Clostridioides difficile infection, commonly known as C. diff. A Tucson VA study analyzing almost four million patients from 30 countries found that metabolic syndrome, which combines obesity with factors like insulin resistance, high blood pressure, and low good cholesterol, nearly doubles the risk of C. diff infection, increasing odds by 94 percent. By comparison, obesity alone increases risk by 14 percent and diabetes alone by 11 percent. The researchers explained that metabolic syndrome can alter gut bacteria and increase chronic inflammation, which in turn affects immune system function. This discovery suggests that healthcare providers should consider patients' metabolic health when developing strategies to prevent and treat C. diff infections.
