Vets4Warriors and WAV launch Key into Care campaign

Vets4Warriors and Worried About a Veteran have launched the Key into Care initiative, a new campaign offering 250 free gun safety care packages to Veterans and their families in honor of America's 250th anniversary. The program aims to prevent Veteran suicide involving firearms by providing a practical tool for safe firearm storage along with connections to peer support services available around the clock.

Each Key into Care package contains a key lockbox designed to securely store the key to a Veteran's existing firearm storage device, whether that's a safe, cabinet, or lockbox. The concept creates what organizers call a "window of lifesaving time and space" by keeping the firearm storage key separate and secure, limiting immediate access during a crisis while still allowing access when needed. The packages also include conversation starters to help Veterans and their support networks discuss safe storage openly, along with resources for accessing confidential, Veteran-specific peer support at any time.

This initiative is available to all Veterans and the people who care about them, regardless of disability rating, enrollment status, or location. The program recognizes that suicide prevention requires support not just for Veterans themselves but for family members, friends, and others in their support network who may be concerned about a Veteran's wellbeing. Worried About a Veteran specifically focuses on empowering loved ones to take action and develop secure gun storage strategies.

The first 250 people to sign up will receive their package within three weeks, and those who sign up after the initial distribution will be added to the next round of mailings. Once a package is delivered, a peer support specialist will reach out to check in, answer questions, and make a personal connection. Mark Graham, executive director of Vets4Warriors, the organization has trained peers who can provide specialized support at any hour of the day or night.
