What is TDIU?
TDIU (Total Disability based on Individual Unemployability) lets VA pay you at the 100% compensation rate when your service-connected conditions prevent you from holding a steady, gainful job — even if your combined rating is less than 100%.
What rating do I need to qualify for TDIU?
The schedular path (§ 4.16(a)) generally requires one condition rated at least 60%, or a combined rating of at least 70% with at least one condition at 40%. If you do not meet those numbers, the extraschedular path (§ 4.16(b)) lets VA still grant TDIU based on how your conditions affect your ability to work.
Can I work and still get TDIU?
You can earn a small amount from “marginal” employment (generally below the federal poverty threshold) or work in a protected/sheltered environment. Substantially gainful employment above the poverty line generally rules out TDIU.
How do I apply for TDIU?
File VA Form 21-8940 (Application for Increased Compensation Based on Unemployability), usually with VA Form 21-4192 completed by your last employer. An accredited VSO can help you file at no cost.
