What is VA Aid & Attendance?
Aid & Attendance (A&A) is an increased monthly pension or compensation amount for veterans and survivors who need another person’s help with everyday activities such as bathing, dressing, eating, or managing medication — or who are bedridden, in a nursing home, or legally blind.
What is the Housebound benefit and how is it different?
Housebound benefits are for veterans substantially confined to their home by a permanent disability. You generally qualify if you have one 100% service-connected disability plus a separate disability rated 60% or higher, or if you are permanently housebound in fact. Aid & Attendance and Housebound cannot be paid at the same time — VA pays the higher of the two.
How do I apply for Aid & Attendance or Housebound?
File VA Form 21-2680 (Examination for Housebound Status or Permanent Need for Regular Aid and Attendance), completed by your physician. If you are in a nursing home, VA Form 21-0779 is also used.
Can my spouse’s care needs increase my benefit?
Yes. A veteran rated at least 30% may receive an additional allowance for a spouse who needs the regular aid and attendance of another person.
